Own a piece of Jesus 2016!

Ever wanted to own some art by me? Now you can! I have original artwork for my Jesus 2016 strip for sale! The original art differs from the finished strip in the sense that the backgrounds, color and text are added digitally, as you can see in the before and after pictures in this post. I'm selling each page for $125. But wait... There's more! With the purchase of the original artwork for a Jesus 2016 strip you will receive an 11X17 print of the finished version of that strip suitable for framing. If interested in buying a page, contact me via my gmail account via my blogger profile. Let me know which strip you are interested in and if you wish to see what the line art looks like first.

The Next One (edit)

I posted the new strip I created earlier but for some unknown reason the strip is displaying worse than ever-even by blogspot standards despite it being a high resolution file and the right format. So here is a preview of the strip...
But if you wish to read the rest of the strip check it out here. I just started a new webcomic series in addition to Jesus 2016, which will be updated infrequently and is basically a place to post my one off and short story strips until I get around to collecting them all into a book. I call it... drumroll please...
And Jesus 2016, of course, will continue to be updated every Tuesday!

The Season of the Beast!

Here is a preview of a new comic story I did for an anthology for the DC Public Library. This anthology should be printed up sometime this month and sold at Authorfest held at the MLK Library.

And here are the first two pages in a limited two color palette
before I converted to greyscale and added the text.

Trump attacks!

This week in Jesus 2016, the mouth that roared attacks! Also take note of his campaign sign behind him. I modified it to better reflect the tone of his campaign. Check it out here!
I just had some postcards made up for SPX to promote the strip. Here is the art for both sides.

And yet more of Seeing Stories! Now with photos!

The Whitman College newspaper, The Pioneer, ran a nice write up of the Seeing Stories: Traversing the Graphic Narrative exhibit and most importantly of all, it has some stunning photographs. The article is here  and the photos are posted down below. All the photos are taken by Tywen Kelly.

The exhibit runs from now until Dec 11. Catch it if you can and please send me lots of photos and / or video if possible. I'll set you up with something sweet in return!

Seeing Stories: the exhibition

As mentioned a few days ago, my double page spread from Colonial Comics is on display in this exhibition in the Sheehan Gallery in Whitman College in Walla Walla from Sept 1 to Dec 11. To have my art on display with artists such as Alison Bechdel, Craig Thompson, Joe Sacco, Chris Ware, Shimura Takako, Regis Loisel & Jean-Louis Tripp, David Mazzuchelli, R. Crumb, and Matt Kindt is humbling indeed. Colonial Comics has its own alcove showcasing art from all the stories in the first volume and Colonial Comics editor Jason Rodriguez will be delivering a lecture there November 14. If any of my friends are close to Walla Walla and can make a visit to the gallery, I would absolutely love a few photos or video for posterity's sake. I would love to draw something for you for your effort!

The schedule of the lectures that are part of the exhibition is here.

Seeing Stories.

I'm VERY excited to finally announce this. The Sheehan Gallery of Whitman College is hosting a semester long show of comics and comics art called Seeing Stories: Traversing the Graphic Narrative. The show also includes art by many impressive artists, some of whom I can finally spill because they are listed in the announcement as giving lectures, such as Alison Bechdel, Joe Sacco, Craig Thompson, JeanLouis Tripp, and François Lapierre! Colonial Comics has an entire alcove for this exhibition and the double page spread I drew for the book will be on display along with art from each of the stories. Colonial Comics editor, Jason Rodriguez, will also be delivering an lecture there in November. There are more big names whose art is in the exhibition to announce soon. The show opens up September 1st and runs through until December 11.

I'm just blown away to be in this show with artists of this caliber!

Hail to the King, baby!

In honor of Jack Kirby's 98th birthday, please enjoy some Kirby greatness!

Happy Birthday Jack!

Divine group intervention

This is the original cartoon I created the day after the Charlie Hebdo attack occurred. It ran in Magic Bullet #10 and was created in about 12-14 hours before the submission deadline for that issue. I changed the language in one of the panels to an Archer reference where ISIS is mentioned. I amused myself putting in the motivational therapy posters in the background. Anyway, I hope I don't have to go into hiding over this.

Hitting the streets of DC this weekend!

The 10th issue of Magic Bullet is hitting the streets this weekend. Look at that beautiful cover by Matt Dembicki with the return of Dr Dremo!

Here is a preview of the strip I created for this issue. A bit timely. I had another idea for a strip and was in the process of working on that when the attack on Charlie Hebdo happened which prompted me to create an entirely different strip 24 hours before the deadline.

Look for it at all the cool places in DC. I'll have a listing of where to get Magic Bullet posted soon.

Those were different times.

I'm currently reading through the Fantagraphics collection of the early Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse strips and just had to laugh at this one panel of Mickey about to go postal. Mickey Mouse was certainly a very different character in those early days.

Love is always stronger than hate!

Ruben Bolling's Tom the Dancing Bug Charlie Hebdo cartoon is brilliant.

You can view the entire strip here.

Bloom County redux!

I've been reading the Bloom County Library collection from IDW recently and enjoying it quite a bit. It reprints ALL of the Bloom County strips, many of which have never been included in any collection before. Bloom County, while some of the strips are indeed timeless, is very much a product of the 1980's. So much so that the IDW collection has annotations telling readers who various celebrities are that might go over the heads of readers who didn't grow up in that era.

Anyhoo, I noticed a discernible difference between a strip from the 1983 "Loose Tails" collection from Little Brown (top strip) and the same strip (on the bottom) collected by IDW in 2009. I refer specifically to the first panel of both versions of the strip. I am guessing the tamer version was the one that ran in newspapers and the saltier version was what Breathed wanted to go with but changed by the syndicate and eventually printed in the 1983 collection.

Some days, I get the best mail!

Every year I draw a cartoon for Airbeat magazine for ALEA's  (Airbourne Law Enforcement Association) Aircrew of the Year Award. These strips chronicle the rescue an air crew has performed that earned them the award. This year the award went to the United States Park Police aircrew led by Kenneth Burchell who bravely airlifted several people to safety during the Navy Yard shootings. Sgt. Burchell sent me a lovely email thanking me for the strip and telling me how exciting it was to see himself in a comic strip portrayed as the hero. Sgt. Burchell, the honor was mine and I salute you.

As a bonus, I have posted the ALEA strip before I added the text- mainly because I was really proud of those clouds I painted in Photoshop. This was the first time I had attempted to do clouds using the paint tools in Photoshop and really liked how they came out  Eventually, however, they became obscured by the text. Comics DC reprinted this on their blog and shortly afterward Navy History Matters magazine reprinted it as well. My work is now in the annals of Navy History. Wild.
